Sleek & lightweight for discretion & convenience

Two new products from Motorola Solutions meet the customer brief for a

lightweight product with a sleek and stylish appearance, combined

with rugged performance.

MOTOTRBO SL Series digital radio

To develop the MOTOTRBO SL Series, Bruce Claxton, Motorola Solutions senior director of design innovation, travelled the globe to listen to customers. The response was demand for a product that had style, refinement and a premium look. Most importantly, it had to be smaller than anything Motorola Solutions had ever done before.

The result is the incredibly thin and light – it weighs as little as your average smartphone – MOTOTRBO SL 7550 portable radio, the ultimate in discreet communications. Versatile and powerful, this device is designed to meet communication needs in the hospitality, services, security and airport industries.

With advanced features such as Intelligent Audio, integrated Bluetooth and covert mode, end-users can provide superior customer service and faster response times, discreetly and professionally.

Russell Penton, security and health and safety officer at Claridge’s Hotel in London, agrees: “The radio needs to be small so that it’s not obvious to any of our guests that I’m wearing a radio, and also because we do such long shifts. We do 12 hours plus on our shifts. The more comfortable and lightweight the radio is, it’s of benefit to us as an end-user, definitely … The new radios themselves are quite a leap forward. It’s the biggest step forward that I’ve seen in my years as a radio user.”

Ruby Mountain, receptionist at Claridge’s Hotel, concludes: “The MOTOTRBO SL Series is fantastic. It’s really lightweight, it’s very easy to use. A lot of the times when we communicate with the luggage porters … the guests are actually standing in front of us, so it’s difficult to do in a subtle way. But the SL Series really helps with that because it’s very small and it’s very convenient.”

CLP analogue portable radio

CLP, the latest business class two-way radio is here! The CLP solves those common user complaints of two-way radios getting in the way, being too uncomfortable to carry all day long, or that users have no place to attach them.

Designed specifically for retail, hospitality, and restaurant environments, the CLP is small and lightweight. Minimal training is required with a simple one-button, push-to-talk operation. Clear, strong audio makes communicating easy even in the noisiest restaurant. The design is sleek and contemporary, yet durable, and the long battery life will stand up to the everyday wear and tear of any fast-paced business.

Flexible carry options include a belt or lanyard to match the workplace environment. A unique magnetic clothing mount even enables attachment, such as on a lapel, apron, shirt or uniform, for those whose business attire precludes a belt.

How’s this for durability?

It’s the toughest endurance motorsport in the

Asia-Pacific region. Australasian Safari is Australia’s

ultimate off-road adventure through the remote,

rugged and stunningly beautiful landscape of

Western Australia. But if a competitor comes off,

race organisers need to know immediately where

the rider is in order to take emergency action.

When you tackle Australia’s version of ‘Paris to Dakar’, how much gear you carry matters. However, user reluctance was overcome literally within the first few days of deploying Motorola Solutions’ MOTOTRBO two-way radios. In the early stages of the race, a motorcyclist had a serious accident and activated the duress button. Using embedded GPS positioning a helicopter was deployed within six minutes. Under the previous communications system, the rider would have lain with a broken leg for more than an hour.

Justin Hunt, director of specialist motorsport event company Justin Hunt Management, said he was almost overcome with emotion to see the system work ‘technically perfectly’ for just the situation for which it was designed.

Previous races had utilised a manual radio system with airborne repeaters, and competitor location was tracked by officials, a system which was slow, cumbersome and relied heavily on manual data.

In contrast, Hunt explains that the new system is more efficient, effective, and dramatically increases competitor safety:

“With staggered starts over four hours, the approximately 100 competitors are very spread out, so it’s like managing a busy airport. Now we can tell where any competitor is at any time, and they’re always contactable.”

“The biggest thing here is the isolation, so response times are crucial. Motorola Solutions’ system has reduced response times to better than world standards for motorsports. It also provides peace of mind for the competitors as well, because they can see that we are good operators using modern technology,” says Hunt.

Durability is also critical when riding at more than 150 kilometres per hour through the bush. The management team need to know that the radios can survive a crash. And not to mention resistance to dust, which permeates everything!

Australasian Safari’s communications experts have been working with the Motorola Solutions Rentals team for almost 10 years, developing a deep mutual understanding that leads to improvement wherever possible. Using Motorola Solutions’ network and trunking, just one person with two computers and two radios can manage the command post for the whole event. The data is overlaid onto a mapping system so that the command post operator views all vehicles on a screen, and can watch the event unfold. Much of the management is now automated and the system easily handles large amounts of data.

“This is one of the most isolated motorsport events in the world, so it’s fantastic to be able to sit back and watch on the mapping screen, knowing everyone is OK. The network and radio system has taken out a lot of the risks – it hasreally revolutionised this event,” concludes Hunt.

Two-way radios outsmart phones for intelligent fleet communications

There has never been a more important time for companies – particularly smaller businesses – to take control of their fleet communications.

With a growing percentage of the global workforce

becoming more mobile, the adoption of newer, innovative

technologies is becoming increasingly important in helping

organisations stay connected to their employees in the field,

while ensuring the benefits of greater operational efficiency.

While we constantly hear about the growing popularity of

consumer mobile devices like tablets and smartphones in

business settings, what we haven’t heard as much about

is the increasing uptake of digital two-way radios in fleet

management.

Two-way radios might seem dated at first thought, however,

the potential benefits these devices offer businesses in

terms of productivity improvements, increased efficiency

and cost-effectiveness make this a hidden growth story.

There are a number of reasons for this popularity. The most

important are the unique features of two-way radios.

For example, two-way radios are still one of the only

devices through which an organisation can facilitate

instant one-to-many group communications. There’s still no

faster or more cost-effective way to assign and schedule

multiple mobile vehicles and blue-collar personnel than with

two-way radios.

Another key differentiator is longevity. Both two-way radio

devices and networks have been designed for much longer

lifecycles than the average faster-moving consumer-oriented

mobile devices of today. Overall, these lifecycles combined

with usage patterns translates into lower overall total

ownership costs for organisations as devices last longer, and

organisations do not have to contend with subscriptions or

pay-per-use fees. Users also tend to use these devices for

critical communications only, rather than social conversation,

thus enhancing productivity.

The advent of digital radios in particular promises to keep

this technology relevant for years to come. Modern digital

units now enable a whole range of applications such as GPS

location-based services, text messaging and other mobile

applications – and even roaming onto mobile networks –

creating new opportunities for increased efficiency and

productivity benefits.

Remote Two-Way Radio System for Geokinetics

Geokinetics Singapore: In August 2010 Mobile Masters designed, installed and commissioned a series of remote radio control and intercom systems, handsets and data links to control a multi-channel VHF radio system that operates between ships out of Singapore.

Each system used a network of handset and interfaces to remotely operate multiple channels per ship.

Vehicle Tracking System

A vehicle tracking system combines the installation of an electronic device in a vehicle, or fleet of vehicles, with purpose-designed computer software to enable the owner or a third party to track the vehicle’s location, collecting data in the process. Modern vehicle tracking systems commonly use GPS or GLONASS technology for locating the vehicle, but other types of automatic vehicle location technology can also be used. Vehicle information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or specialized software. Urban public transit authorities are an increasingly common user of vehicle tracking systems, particularly in large cities.

Active versus passive tracking

Several types of Vehicle Tracking devices exist. Typically they are classified as “Passive” and “Active”. “Passive” devices store GPS location, speed, heading and sometimes a trigger event such as key on/off, door open/closed. Once the vehicle returns to a predetermined point, the device is removed and the data downloaded to a computer for evaluation. Passive systems include auto download type that transfer data via wireless download. “Active” devices also collect the same information but usually transmit the data in real-time via cellular or satellite networks to a computer or data centre for evaluation.

Many modern vehicle tracking devices combine both active and passive tracking abilities: when a cellular network is available and a tracking device is connected it transmits data to a server; when a network is not available the device stores data in internal memory and will transmit stored data to the server later when the network becomes available again.
