Two-way radios have proven themselves to be a highly effective form of communication across multiple business and industry groups as well as being useful for individual and private users. Two-way radios are able to transmit and receive and are available in mobile units, handhelds and base stations.
Users of two-way radios can operate on either an analog or digital system.
Analog Systems:
Analog systems are still the most widely used form of two-way radios communications. Despite common misconceptions, about Digital vs Analog systems, Analog systems continue to be developed and will continue to be a strong form of two-way radio communication in the long term future.
Conventional analog radios form the backbone of most communications systems. They are well proven technology and suitable for most consumer applications. Analog radios are highly suitable for point to point or wide area network access.
Today’s analog radios are highly sophisticated with many calling and signalling options. Analog radios are affordable, lightweight and robust with many features and benefits. Analog radios come in intrinsically safe models and models that have built in health and safety benefits such as man down and lone worker features. An advantage of analog systems are that they are far easier to integrate with different systems and makes and models of radios. Unlike digital systems where there is less cross platform compatibility and it is more difficult to integrate different types or makes of equipment.
Digital Systems:
There has been a major push in the two-way radio communication industry to promote digital systems. Most digital systems have the ability to be backward compatible with analog systems and therefore can provide a transitional upgrade capability if you were looking to upgrade your system.
Digital systems build on the benefits of analog systems providing additional robustness under adverse conditions. In analog systems, as the signal strength decreases, noise and dropouts increase, severely degrading voice quality. Digital systems are less susceptible to noise, resulting in superior clarity at varying signal strengths as the following table 1.0 shows. A key element of digital systems are that they are inherently secure and less susceptible to interference from other users.
Mobile Masters has commissioned many digital systems across Perth. The feedback from people using digital systems categorically is that they are truly amazed at the voice quality, the signal strength and the features of this new and exciting technology.
