Interior — Before You Leave
IMPORTANT
  • Check for moisture or mould in cupboards and under seats
Small leaks show up as musty smells or staining. Find the source before it spreads.
  • Test all appliances — fridge, hot water, stove
Run the fridge 24 hours before departure to reach temperature.
  • Check gas lines and connections for leaks
Brush soapy water on connections — bubbles mean a leak. Don't use a naked flame to check.
  • Test smoke and CO detectors
Replace batteries annually. CO detectors have a 5-year lifespan.
  • Check water pump and fresh water tank
Flush the tank with a water sanitiser if it's been sitting for more than a month.
  • Check toilet cassette is clean and chemical levels correct
  • Test 12V electrics — lights, USB, fans
  • Check solar panel output and battery bank levels
Clean panels lose up to 25% efficiency. Dust and bird droppings are the main culprits.

Putting the Van into Storage
SEASONAL
  • Book a professional detail before storage
Salt, grime and oxidation continue to work on the surface during storage. A full detail with UV sealant stops this.
  • Apply UV protectant to all exterior rubber seals
A silicone-based seal conditioner prevents cracking over summer.
  • Place tyre covers on all wheels
UV destroys sidewalls faster than miles. Essential for outdoor storage.
  • Disconnect battery or connect to a maintenance charger
  • Cover vents and openings to prevent insect/rodent entry
Mesh covers over vents and fly screens left closed are the simplest prevention.
  • Leave interior cupboards open slightly for airflow
Prevents musty odours and mould in confined spaces during long storage.
  • Document the van's condition with photos before storage
Helps identify any new damage when you return, and is useful for insurance.
  • Check insurance policy is current and covers storage period

💡 Mobile Masters Detailing Tip — When to Call a Professional

This checklist handles what you can do yourself. But some things need a professional touch — oxidation removal, ceramic coating application, black streak treatment, and full interior deep cleans all require the right products and technique to do properly. Perth's UV is unforgiving. If your van's paintwork or gelcoat is showing signs of fading, chalking, or oxidation, catching it early with a paint correction and sealant will cost significantly less than full restoration later.
